September job openings were at 7 million, down only slightly from August. According to the September Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), the number of workers who were hired was little changed, as was the number who left their jobs.
Here’s a summary of key data from the survey:
- Job openings: 7.0 million
- People hired: 5.9 million
- People who left their jobs (total): 5.8 million
- People who left their jobs (voluntarily quit): 3.5 million
- People who left their jobs (layoff or involuntary reason): 2.0 million
The continued strength of the job market means companies can’t afford to give their employees any reason to consider pursuing greener pastures. Workers who continually feel overloaded with projects are flight risks. Eventually, they will begin to look for a job with less stress and better work-life balance.
According to a recent Robert Half survey, 91% of workers said they were at least somewhat burned out. Here are some steps you can take to help keep employee burnout at bay:
1. Know the signs of burnout
Be on the lookout for signs of employee burnout, including missed deadlines, decreased productivity, lower quality of work, a negative attitude and excessive overtime. Managers who notice these issues should consider bringing in temporary staff or seasonal employees to help take some of the load off of team members.
2. Manage stress levels
Regularly meet with your team so you know their workloads, priorities and pain points. In addition, make sure your employees are taking time off to recharge. (Set a good example by planning a vacation yourself.) Encourage team members to participate in any available wellness programs at your company. Offering flexible work schedules or telecommuting options can also go a long way toward reducing burnout.
3. Recognize good work
While more money or additional perks might not alleviate burnout, it can certainly help keep morale up. Employees, particularly your top performers, need to feel that their work is valued. And one final note: Simply remembering to offer a prompt and sincere thank-you to employees who do a good job can be more beneficial than you might think.
